Obituary

Alexandra Sophia Gracie

“The part of you that is me will never die” –

It is with great sorrow that we share with you that our beautiful, beloved Alexandra Sophia Gracie left this world unexpectedly on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the age of 34.  Alex leaves behind her husband Nick Scherman who is understandably shattered by the loss of his soulmate and best friend.  Alex and Nick had a wonderful and beautiful marriage and Nick was the love of her life. Alex was the only and cherished daughter of Karen Blackburn, who is devastated by her loss. Alex had an incredibly close relationship with her late father, Robertson Munro Gracie (Rob), and treasured her memories of him. They will be reunited in love and spirit.

Alex was an exemplary and accomplished student from the beginning of her academic career.  After graduating from Notre Dame High School, she received her degree in Psychology and Sociology from Trent University. She later obtained a second degree in Social Work from the University of Victoria, and recently received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Dalhousie.

Alex was a fierce and staunch champion for equity and inclusion long before it was given an official title. She loved travelling with Nick, and loved music and cats – their pets Iggy and Miso will be lost without her. Alex was witty, determined, and she excelled in her career. She was admired and held in high esteem by her colleagues for her effort in giving a voice to their most vulnerable clients. Our hearts go out to her wonderful friends and co-workers at Downsview Community Legal Services.

It would be impossible to discuss Alex without recognizing her incredible extended family who played a huge part in helping Alex reach her goals: her Grandma Doris Blackburn (deceased), Bill Doherty (deceased) and Grandpa Ken Blackburn, Nana Jean Galloway (deceased); Uncle David and Aunt Micheila; and Uncle Kent and Aunt Jennie, all of whom played an integral role in Alex’s life. Alex will be fondly remembered by family Wanda and Andy Ross. She will be missed by special friend Kerry Guihan.

Alex was also predeceased by her Grandma Mickey Gracie, Grandfather Rab Gracie, and will be sadly missed by her Aunt Allison Gracie.

She will be lovingly remembered and treasured by her younger cousins, Kael, Kerrington, Kennedy, Jacob, and Kobe, whom she loved introducing to life in the city. Alex also leaves behind her loving mother-in-law Moira Spielman and Nick’s brothers Victor and Alec.

Alex was predeceased by her doting Godfather Jim McGregor, and her wonderful Godmothers Sandra Mailey and Barbara McFarlane remain heartbroken with her loss.

Throughout her life, Alex was blessed with a loving and loyal group of friends and co-workers. Their support and love during this time has been incredible, and we are grateful to all of you for being part of her world.

Alex, you touched so many in your short time with us and we will never forget you.

“..We weep because one so loved, should live a life so brief.”

A Celebration of Life for Alex will be held at Stonefields Estate, 1985 9th Line Road, Beckwith, ON K7C 3P2 on Tuesday, August 22. The service is to begin at 1 p.m. with Reception to follow from 2-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to Gerstein Crisis Center at gerstein-crisis-centre | CharityProfile | Donate Online (canadahelps.org) or The Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital Foundation at Carleton Place - Donate Now (carletonplacehospital.ca)
