Alexis "Sandy" Geren Obituary

ALEXIS (SANDY) GEREN
June 15, 1948 - March 8, 2023

Sandy Geren’s full maiden name was Alexis Francine McGee. She was born in the town of Grayling Michigan. Her mother was American, her father, James McGee was Canadian and served in the Canadian Army during WWII. Jim McGee decided to rejoin the Canadian armed forces and the family moved to Canada when Sandy was five years old. Sandy moved many times with her military family, until they finally settled down in the town of Oromocto, New Brunswick, just outside of camp Gagetown…the Canadian army’s largest training ground.

Sandy met Richard Geren in 1966 whose family also lived in Oromocto. Richard was studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. They fell in love and were married in centennial year 1967. Moving from place to place continued for Sandy as Richard worked in various mining and metallurgical businesses. They lived in Sept Iles Quebec, Tracy Quebec, Noranda Quebec, Pointe Claire Quebec, Oakville Ontario, Montreal, and Franklin Tennessee. On retirement, they discovered Carleton Place and settled there in 2005. Sandy was a devoted mother and raised two children through the difficulty of repeated moves and frequent absences of her husband. She loved to cook and enjoyed entertaining company. In retirement she and Richard started playing golf and enjoyed it so much they left for Florida each year to play golf during winter. Back in Carleton Place, she also developed a love for gardening. Sandy made many friends in Canada and Florida and made a point of staying in touch with them. Her friends were always impressed with her cheerfulness and generosity and thinking of others. She had a heart of gold and in each community that she lived, she sought out ways to support poor and underprivileged families and children. Sandy was a beautiful person…outside and inside. Always a smile, always in good spirits, a kind heart, friendly and helpful to everyone.

She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband Richard (Rick), son Christopher, daughter, Jennifer, daughter in-law Mary and her grandsons, Keith and Steven.

Friends may support the family from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a memorial gathering and lunch on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place.

Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
