Clarence "Orm" Giles Obituary

Clarence Ormond Giles

Former Warden County of Lanark

May 28, 1929 – September 9. 2022

Peacefully at Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. Son of the late Robert Alfred Giles and Evelyn Healey. Husband of the late Mary, special friend of Ruth Hall, Father of Sylvia (Christopher) Carleton Place and Stephen (Paul) of Ottawa. Pre-deceased by Brothers Vincent, Bernard and Albert Giles. Survived by his sister Maryanna Dunlop of Dunnville ON and brother Theodore (Ted) Giles of Fergus ON, and many nieces and nephews and extended family members. Dad was a lifelong resident of Carleton Place and will be remembered throughout the Ottawa Valley as a politician and community volunteer for over 70 years. His involvement in many organizations over the years include Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital Board, St James Anglican Church, St John’s Masonic Lodge, Land O’ Lakes Shrine Club, and various executive positions in the local provincial and federal Progressive Conservative parties.

In addition to the many community organizations in Carleton Place, he served over 30 years in municipal politics as Councillor, Deputy Reeve and Deputy Mayor of the Town of Carleton Place and Warden of Lanark County. One of Dad’s proudest moments, after lobbying the Government of Ontario for years, was the expansion of Highway 7 to four lanes. In September 2019 he was honoured by the Town of Carleton Place by having “Orm Giles Park” named in his honour for service to his community. In his concluding remarks that day, he quoted words of Winston Churchill that sums up his life.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
