Donald Colby Obituary

Donald James Colby

Born 8 August, 1935 in Montreal, Quebec and passed away peacefully 11 November, 2024 at Queensway Carleton Hospital, Ottawa.  Predeceased by parents Thomas Colby and Thelma (Macdonald) and daughter Margaret Jennifer.  Father to  Ian (Patty); Grandfather to Erin (Chad LaForty ) and Sean (Hannah);  Great grandfather to Eloise and Jack. Husband to Anne Staples-Colby and fondly remembered by extended step family.

Don worked for several years in Montreal with the Bell Telephone Company, Northern Electric Company Ltd., and the Shell Oil Company, before attending Mount Allison University where he graduated with a B. Sc. Degree in Geology and Chemistry.  He then obtained a Teaching diploma from MacDonald College.  Don taught in Quebec before moving to Brighton in 1967 where his tenure with the Geography department would be most notable at East Northumberland Secondary School in Brighton, ON, where the “kid whapper” was born.  He was a strong advocate to student learning and promotion of Outdoor Education. He enjoyed canoeing, skiing, travelling Canada and an avid photographer.  Don was very involved with the Brighton Lions Club and various community activities.  Cremation. 

If desired, memorial donations to the Brighton Lions Club or the Brighton Public Library would be appreciated by the family.  Remembrance gathering to be announced in near future.   Private family inurnment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Brighton, ON. in spring of 2025.
