Donald “Scotty” Ferguson

Born July 11th, 1932 in Shiresmill, Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. Died on September 9th, 2023 in Carleton Place, Ontario at 91 years of age.

A Long-time resident of Lanark County, Ontario, Scotty has played his last tune on the piano. He emigrated to Canada at the age of 18 in September of 1951, arriving onboard the ship Lismoria at Pier 51 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He made his way by train to Ottawa. Work was difficult to find so he went to Marathon, Ontario where he worked his trade as a painter. After a year in the wilds of Ontario he returned to Ottawa and began his employment with the Government of Canada Public Works.

In 1952 Scotty met his future wife, Shirley Ann (Shash) Wilson, at a skating rink when he splashed her with a spray of ice. To calm her down, he asked her out for supper and she accepted. They were married on March 8th, 1956 and were inseparable until her death in 2016.

Scotty and Shash cherished the life and people that they found in Almonte, Carleton Place and Franktown.

He loved playing the piano and entertained people for many years in numerous community halls. He continued to volunteer playing in senior’s residences until his hands could no longer manage the keyboard, shortly before his death.

Scotty was predeceased by his Wife, Shirley Ann, his mother Christina, Father Daniel Ferguson, Sister-in-law Audrey Weatherall and Brother-in-law Ian Lugg. He is survived by his sister Agnus (Nan) and brother, William (Billy) in Scotland, also his sister-in-law Frances (Fran) Bredin of Arnprior, Ontario, and many nieces and nephews.

As a final request, Scotty would appreciate it very much if people would spend some time with a senior citizen. Play a game of cribbage with them, take them for a car ride down a quiet country road, have an ice-cream cone, or just sit and play a tune of days gone bye on the piano.
