Edward Andrew Garland
September 23, 1937 – October 18, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family shares the passing of their beloved Irish man, Ed.
Son of Barbara and Bert Garland (Deceased). Brother of Beverly/Jack (deceased); Garth/Elaine & Don/Linell. Dearly loved husband of Karyn Hanson. Father of Brian, Julie/Jeff and cherished Grandpa of Connor. Stepfather to Jared/Minji Garland, Jordan/Kathryn Garland and Grandpa Ed to Olivia and Jack Finn. He will be missed by the extended Garland and Hanson families.
Ed had the heart of a farmer and the mind of a scholar. He had immense academic success as a graduate of Engineering Physics from Queen’s University. He amassed several other degrees including a Masters in Probability and Statistics from the University of Sussex.
Ed began as an Astronomer at the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa. He went on to become the Head of Mathematics at South Carleton High School, possibly to keep his eye on his Best Athlete trophy from his time as a student. After retiring from teaching, he became a certified Financial Advisor and joined Armstrong & Quaile Ass.
Ed was an accomplished athlete who loved all sports especially if he won. As the 3rd. base player for the legendary Stittsville Lumbermen, his team won the Provincial Championship. He was a competitive tennis player and avid golfer. He loved his Gunners – Arsenal Football Club, and the Blue Jays.
He embraced his Irish roots with pride, making several trips to Ireland and loved to claim Kilkenney Castle as his home away from home. His last trip was for the 200th Anniversary of the Guinness Brewery – a happy time.
Most of all, he loved his farm and creek in Richmond. He knew every kind of tree and critter. He was an avid hunter and lover of nature. Ed could quote Robert Frost and Yeats from memory and had a deep love of poetry.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care and kindness that was given to Ed by the incredible staff at Carleton Lodge, Goulbourn Unit.
