Edward Smith
(September 28, 1933 – April 28, 2024)
Born Island Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland
Died, Carleton Place, Ontario
With his sweetheart Nellie by his side, Ed slipped away on April 28, after fighting valiantly to stay with the family he so deeply cherished. While we will never fill the huge void he leaves with his passing, we know that the love he gave us all will never end, and he will be in our hearts forever through his stories, his smiles, and those wonderful bear hugs.
Predeceased by his parents Robert (1979) and Gladys (Gregory) (2002), he leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years, Nellie (Cram), daughter Shelley (Carman Carroll), granddaughters Natalie Hunter, Becca Carroll (Ian Waugh), Susan Cadman (Rick), and great- grandchildren Alesha and Zachary Cadman, his blended family Monty (Andrea), Colin (Erin Cadigan), and Madeline Hunter, many nieces and nephews, and many many friends. A proud son of Newfoundland, Ed moved with Nellie to Carleton Place, Ontario in 2020 to be close to family. Any time spent with family was filled with stories, laughter, and love, and those memories are precious. Before moving to Ontario, Ed and Nellie were pillars of the church community of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Mount Pearl, especially in the choir, and through the weekly cafe, and they have maintained close connection there, and with their friends and neighbours at Masonic Park. Before moving to Mount Pearl, Ed and Nellie lived most of their lives in Queen’s Cove, where they were involved in everything related to the church and the community. Many volunteer hours and community service were the hallmarks of their life together. Whether singing in the Men’s Choir in Hodges Cove Parish, wielding a chainsaw to help clear trees for a labyrinth in Mount Pearl, ferrying the church ladies to their many meetings, or adding the voice of practicality and experience, Ed lived a life of service, as he was raised to do by his parents, and as he and Nellie raised Shelley to do. Ed made friends wherever he went, and Stoneridge Manor, Carleton Place, where he spent his last year, was no exception.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff there, whose kindness and caring attention made him contented and comfortable, and eased the worry of his family. Thanks also to Doctors Buckley and Drake. The care and support for Ed and the family, near the end of his life especially, was heartwarming and very much appreciated. It will never be forgotten. A special thank you to the Reverend Jonathan Askwith, whose visits with Ed at Stoneridge, and time spent sitting with family during Ed’s last days were so very much appreciated. With a big laugh, lots of stories, big hugs and a big heart, he left an imprint on everyone lucky enough to have had him in their lives.
