GARNET ROYDEN (GARY) HANES
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garnet Hanes, on November 1, 2025, at Waterside Retirement Community Center in Carleton Place.
Son of the late Earle Walker Hanes of Burk’s Falls, Ontario and Eileen Mildred Batstone of Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Gary was born in Toronto on August 28, 1928. Predeceased by his wife Dorice Hanes. Father of Kevin Hanes of Ottawa. Predeceased by his first wife, Anne, mother of Kevin.
Gary was educated in Toronto, obtaining a Ph. D degree in physics from the University of Toronto in 1955. He worked as a research physicist, and later as head of the Length and Time Standards section, at the National Research Council in Ottawa, retiring in 1991.
Gary and Dorice were married in 1983 and lived in Ottawa until retirement, later moving to Carleton Place.
Gary was interested in natural history, and devoted time to a number of studies concerning plants, birds and amphibians. He and Dorice enjoyed many recreational activities such as skiing, hiking, curling, canoeing, and square dancing. They shared a great love of the outdoors and spent time year-round at their cottage near Algonquin Park. For many years, they assisted the chief naturalist of Algonquin Park with a research study on the life history of Gray Jays and, as members of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists club, they participated in a number of activities of a natural history nature, such as field trips, hikes and lectures.
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, a donation to The Friends of Algonquin Park, Box 248, Whitney, ON, K0J 2M0 would be appreciated.
