George Hamor
It is with great sadness we announce the death of George Hamor, P. Eng., in his 76th year (November 14, 1950 - March 7, 2026). George died peacefully at home of cancer with his family by his side. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, the only child of Dr. Lesley Hamor and his wife Erna.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Anne (née Morris), his much-loved only son, Alex, his wonderful daughter-in-law, Suhaila Agnew, and cherished grandsons, Dean and Calvin Hamor. George also leaves behind the close-knit members of the Morris family whom he loved dearly: Susan and Brent Olson and their sons, David (Jen) and Michael (Sarah); Bill Morris(deceased), his wife Janet and their son, Adam (Sasha); John and Lorraine (Stephenson) and their son, Aidan (Mrinel); Ruth and Peter Bengough, their daughter, Megan (Jordan) and son, Cameron (Emily).
George’s family emigrated to Canada in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. They settled in Hamilton and George quickly learned to speak English and did very well in school. Every summer he went to Haliburton to YMCA Camp Wanakita. This was foundational in his life – he was a camper, then a staff member, the waterfront director and eventually the maintenance man. He absorbed all the camp values - love of nature, the enjoyment of friends and pleasure in an active lifestyle. He considered his camp friends some of the most important in his life.
Before university, George took a couple of years and worked as a roadie for a band called “The Brass Union”. He was the technical guy who kept equipment running as they played one gig after another throughout Ontario and Quebec.
After two years in the band, George began his studies in Electrical Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton. He was born to be an engineer – he was a problem solver who approached every challenge logically, analyzing the options and implementing the best solution. He was a most competent individual, able to figure out how to fix things and to do so without delay. He began his engineering career at Leigh Instruments in Carleton Place where he met his wife. For many years he was a project manager at Canadian Marconi, later CMC. He enjoyed his colleagues and continued to meet with them regularly following retirement.
Owning a cottage where he welcomed family and friends throughout the years was his pride and joy. The cottage lifestyle suited him perfectly as there were always plenty of jobs to keep him busy. Introducing his two little grandsons to fun at the lake was a great pleasure. In the winter he curled for almost forty years, never perfecting his game but always enjoying it and the friends he made there.
Although the Hungarian dishes his mother made were his favourites, he had a real affinity for all things Scottish – fine whisky, Walker’s shortbread and little white Westies. George was a fine man and will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Carleton Place Curling Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to YMCA Camp Wanakita in tribute to George (https://www.ymcahbb.ca/donate) – he said he would love that!
