Leaving behind a legacy of love, work, strength and dignity and a family that adores him; it is with great sadness we announce the passing of James “Art” Quartermain on November 30th, 2024, at the age of 88.
His devotion and love will be forever missed by his wife of 66 years, Theresa and his six children: Michael (Mary), Donna (Michi), Karen (Bill), Kevin (Darlene), Gary (Lesley) and Brent (Kelly). He was adored by his grandchildren, Alissa, Byron, Hannah, Christopher, Dylan, Ryan, Samantha, Megan, Skylar, Bethany, Morgan, Alexa, Kelsey, Jay and Great Grandpa to Austen, Violet, Milo, Everlee and Henry.
Art was the son of the late Eleanor and Fred Quartermain and is survived by his sister Grace, predeceased by brothers Carl, Fred and sister Margaret. He will be sadly missed by sister-in-law Elizabeth and many nieces and nephews.
Art was an educator, coach and community leader. Art started his teaching career at Carleton Place High School in 1964 and was the Vice Principal at CPHS as well as Almonte, Perth and Smiths Falls high schools. Art’s dedication to teaching was recognized when he was awarded the Marjorie Laphen Merit Teachers Award considered the highest honour for a teacher in Lanark County. Art served as Trustee with the Lanark County Catholic School Board for 25 years, serving as Chairman for two terms all while working towards his Masters in Education.
From skating on the Chaplin rink in Glen Tay to the Perth Blue Wings Hall of Fame to a full scholarship at Clarkson University in Potsdam, Art had a stellar hockey career wearing the Number 10 jersey and was proud to be a member of the Clarkson team that had an undefeated season and captured the bronze medal at the NCAA Championships in 1957 against Harvard.
Art devoted more than half of his life to Canoeing/Sprint Racing serving as Commodore of the Canadian Canoe Association, Canadian representative at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics; Canoe Ontario Treasurer, and official at six Canada Summer Games. Art was honoured with the K Edward Gilbert Award in the Builder category by the Canoe Canadian Association. Art had been an avid member of CP Old Puckers and the CP Curling Club.
He entered the municipal political arena as a member of the Carleton Place Town Council for two terms. Art was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church community and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus (K of C).
Every life leaves a footprint in the sand of time, but the deepest and lasting impressions are
made by those that live with purpose and passion. That was our Dad. A legend.
