Jeanne “Joan” Marie Hill

Joan Hill, nee McCartney passed away peacefully at the age of 89 surrounded by the love of family and the compassionate nursing team at Fairview Manor, Almonte, Ontario on Friday, October 10, 2025.

A cherished and beloved mother to Kenneth (Sandra) Calgary, Alberta and Stephen (Julie) Carleton Place, Ontario. Predeceased by her husband William Hill. Joan was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire Scotland on April 26, 1936. She immigrated to Canada with her husband Bill in 1966 with their 2 young sons to start a new life. They made a good life in Canada and lived in Toronto originally as Bill was employed with Toronto Metro Police on arrival. Later living in Marathon, Markham, Stouffville, Espanola, Birch Island, Willisville, Elliot Lake, and in the final years Carleton Place, Ontario. Joan received her hairdresser license in Scotland and continued to work as a stylist in Canada and held various retail jobs throughout her working years. The full-time career she enjoyed the most was taking care of her family. They fully enjoyed Canada, and it was home. But, remained forever proud of their Scottish heritage and “Back Home”.

Joan was an avid knitter and has crafted numerous blankets, cardigans, jumper sweaters, baby sets, mittens, and little hats for preemie babies. Whenever Joan would hear that someone had a baby on the way, she got busy making them a little traditional “set” of booties, sweater, and hat. Those who have received any of Joans work have and continue to treasure them always. She regularly had a novel book on the go until the latter months. She was a gentle soul with a big smile who enjoyed the simple things in life, being at the beach, playing cards, bingo, and simply sitting amongst loved ones and friends enjoying good chats. Joan always enjoyed at holiday times a traditional rum and coke, while always saying “Not too strong, or I’ll be singing myself home”!

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Roger Drake, and the wonderful nursing team, the recreational team, her hairdresser, and all the caring staff at Fairview Manor that embraced Joan and took great care of her over the 3 years she resided there.

We will miss her dearly but take comfort in knowing that after having lost our dad in 2012, she is now reunited with the love of her life.
