Jack’s family is sad to announce his death on April 9, 2025 at the age of 91. Jack is survived by his wife Louise (Delcellier), together for over 60 years, his children Mike (Dionne), Meghan (Doug Roebuck), and Meredith (Shawn Millman); his grandchildren Daniella Link and Caelin Lepine; his nieces Laura Domenchini (Joe) and Tara Piepers (Paul Fitzgerald); his nephew Chuck Wattam, his sister-in-law Norma Cummings; great and great great nieces and nephews. Jack loved and was very proud of his family. Jack was predeceased by his parents Charles and Merle (Van Alstyne) Link and his sisters Lois Wattam (Richard), Joan Breuer (Andrew), and Elizabeth Link.
Born in Ottawa on March 12, 1934, he attended St. Malachy’s Public School in Ottawa and then Hull Intermediate High School. In December 1951, at the age of 17, he began work in the Department of Trade and Commerce, Government of Canada. He remained a Public Servant in Ottawa in various departments, always in the finance field, until his retirement in 1989. Following retirement, he was a part of the successful start-up of various government initiatives including the UFFI removal assistance program and the GST call centre in 1991. The family lived first in Westboro, then Glen Cairn, Munster, and Carleton Place (with a short interruption in Corkery). Jack enjoyed softball and bowling- which he was pretty good at. He coached youth baseball and women’s softball. He had a zest for life, a passion for nostalgic black and white movies (his favourite was Casablanca), jazz, swing, 50’s sound, theater, and science fiction. He was a foodie in search of the best French onion soup. He frustrated many cut-throat card players in euchre, hearts and crib. He was a keen gardener, loved flowers and prided himself on having the best lawn on the block. He was a founding board member of the Carleton Place and District Youth Centre. In the early 2000’s, he wrote, produced, and/or directed musical shows for the Mississippi Mudds theatre group in Carleton Place.
Family will be gathered at Braumeister Brewery, 19 Moore St in Carleton Place on April 17th. Friends are welcome between the hours of 4pm and 7pm.
We thank the doctors and nurses of both the Queensway Carleton and Carleton Place hospitals for their compassion, honesty and attentiveness and Dr. Jennifer Laskey for her years of care.
For those who wish, a donation can be made to the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital Foundation.
