Kathleen (Kay) Scrivens (nee Valiquette) passed away unexpectedly in hospital on November 3, 2024 with her caring and loving family by her side.
Kathleen was the 8th child of Anne (Donohue) and Patrick Valiquette. She was predeceased by her siblings, Harry (Alexis), Jim (Lois), Carmel, John (Vi), Pat (Shirley), Frances and Wayne (Zita). Kathleen was the beloved wife, for over 74 years of the late Gordon Scrivens and the devoted mother of the late Stephen (Linda) and Greg (Patricia). Kathleen was a cherished Nanny to Jonathan (Karley), Christopher (Kayla), and a loving great – Nanny to Riley, Blakely, Hudson, Lincoln and her newest granddaughter, Charlotte. Kathleen was a special Sister-in-Law to Patricia Scrivens (Ken, deceased). Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to Dr. Steven Gravelle, and Nurse Geoff Lawson of Winchester Memorial Hospital and Dr. Di Santo and Nurse Blake at the Ottawa Heart Institute, who treated and cared for our Mother/Nanny as if she were their own.
Thank you to Dr. Merrett for caring for Kathleen for over 48 years.
Kathleen grew up on the family farm on the Opeongo Line and went to elementary school in a one room school house on the Opeongo Rd., grades 1-8. For Grades 9-13 she boarded in a convent in Eganville, graduating at age 15. After high school she attended Business College in Ottawa. Eventually she moved to Ottawa to work in the Federal Government with Transport Canada, ending her career of over 53 years, as the head of Pay and Benefits.
Gordon and Katheen built a house in Metcalfe on Hwy 31 (Bank Street) where they raised their two boys. Kathleen was involved with the establishment of the Osgoode Care Centre, was a volunteer in various events with the Metcalfe Lions Club, as well as fundraising events for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, Family Alzheimer’s Golf tournaments and the Alzheimer’s Curling Bonspiels. Kathleen was president of the Ladies Curling Club in Metcalfe, in 1962 / 1963. She decided to retire from the game of curling, at age 89, when COVID forced closure of the club. Her skill at Euchre was renowned, as well as, her luck at Bingo, which she enjoyed with many of her friends at the Stanley Apartments. Kathleen’s homemade butterscotch pies and butter tarts were much sought after by her family and coveted by the many suppers, banquets and other catered events to which she often willingly contributed.
Her life was one of devotion, generosity and resilience. Kathleen’s family meant everything to her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her including her lifelong friend Al Micus and Betty Murdoch.
A Catholic Mass will be held on Friday November 15th, 2024 at 11am at Our Lady of the Visitation Church, 5338 Bank Street, South Gloucester, followed by a reception in the parish hall.
For those who wish a donation can be made to the Osgoode Care Centre, the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Ottawa Heart Institute.
