With profound sadness, we announce the death of Manfred Rau on November 17 in Carleton Place, Ontario at the age of 79. Caring husband to Glenda (nee Campbell) for over 52 years, loving father to Andrea, father in law to Scott and grandfather to Dominic, Sebastien and Anderson.
He was born in East Prussia and spent his childhood in Frankfurt before moving to London, Ontario with his late parents, Helene and Karl in 1956. He stayed in London to complete his BSc in Zoology and PhD in Parasitology from the University of Western Ontario.
Manfred loved to share his diverse knowledge and experience with family, friends and his many students. He could always explain very complex things in an understandable way that made you want to learn more.
As a McGill professor at MacDonald College for over 40 years, he shared his passion for parasitology, entomology and ecology with generations of students. He engaged them with his conversational teaching style and genuine love of science and discovery. This carried over in his ground-breaking research and publication on a diverse range of topics.
Manfred also loved horses and riding. In over 50 years of owning horses and 40 years officiating at horse shows as a judge and steward he was highly respected for always putting the wellbeing of the horses first. He enjoyed the many days he spent at the barn and at horse shows and treasured the relationships he built. He also brought his passion for the environment to his volunteer work including the protection of Terra Cotta in Pointe Claire, Quebec and the management of the woodland at Camp Sylvan in Southwestern Ontario.
He will be greatly missed by brother in law Jay (Nancy), nephews Tim (Emma) and Colin (Tracy), great nieces and nephews Jenn, Fox, Rhys and Octavia, close family friend Vera, extended family and many friends, colleagues, and students.
Arrangements entrusted to Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favourite charity in Manfred’s name.
