It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marion (Katherine) Helgason (nee Aitken), on January 19th, 2025 in her 100th year. Predeceased by her husband Bernard (Bernie). Marion will be missed by her children Peter (Maribeth), David (Juliann), and daughter in law Rosalind. Beloved grandma to Callie, Courtney (Jamal), Rick (Liz) and Katrina (Antonio), and great-grandchildren that brought her joy in her later years, Luca and Eva.
Born in Appleton, Ontario to parents John Aitken and Caramel Crawford, she grew up on the family farm alongside her two sisters Olive and Dorothy, learning the values of hard work, kindness and community that would define her life. Marion met her husband Bernie at the local YMCA, and they married in 1952. Together they shared 53 wonderful years of marriage before Bernie’s passing in 2006.
Marion was known for her many talents, including her love of knitting, baking and her fierceness on the curling rink as a proud member of the Ottawa Hunt and Curling Club. She not only enjoyed, but excelled at curling. Marion's generosity extended beyond her family. She was a dedicated volunteer of the Bells Corner’s United Church, contributing many knitted items to the church’s Annual Bazaar.
Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service celebrating Marion's life at the Barker Funeral Home (19 McArthur Ave, Carleton Place) on Saturday June 28, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at the United Cemeteries (2677 Cemetery Side Rd, Carleton Place).
