Ray Potter Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Lynn Potter, peacefully with his wife Sharon by his side on Sunday, October 27, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.
Predeceased by his father, Lorne Potter, and his mother, Miggy (Mildred) Potter. Ray leaves behind his beloved wife Sharon (nee Bowmaster) of 25 years, his children James (aka Burt) (Lana) & Lea (Marc), stepchildren Jennifer & Jonathan Romans (Tasha), and his cherished grandchildren; Tyler, Matthew, Maddy, Lachlan, Elodie, and Rhys (aka Archie).

Born and raised in Carleton Place, Ray followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1960 where he served for 15 years with the Royal Canadian Regiment of Electrical; Mechanical Engineers. After basic training, he travelled with posts in Shilo Manitoba, Petawawa,  Kingston, Ontario, and several in Germany before settling back down in Carleton Place in 1975 with his family. He went on to work with the Department of National Defense, and then finished his working career as Dispatcher/Office Manager with Premier Bus Lines.

An athlete all his life, hockey (Go Sens Go!) and baseball were among his favourite sports to play (although he’d watch anything but tennis!). He spent many years playing net for the Old Puckers and catching for the Old Ballers. He appreciated the lifelong friendships he made with teammates and the great memories that were created during those years.
A character with a great sense of humour, Ray never passed up an opportunity to give the ladies a hard time. “It’s a good thing he’s cute!” was heard often and without a doubt, got him out of trouble a time or two (helped along by his goofy ears, the sparkle in his eyes, and his delighted chortle at your reaction). He loved his coffee group get togethers at Tim’s and reminiscing with friends and family about his antics and adventures (fleeing au natural down the street in Amsterdam!). His presence and personality will be greatly missed by his friends and
family.
We wish to recognize some very special neighbours: Bill & Sheron Cooke, Phil & Beth Aube, and Billy Russell who were an ongoing source of support over the years, helping Ray stay at home as long as possible. Thank you to his family doctor, Dr. Stephen Walker (and Bev!), and all the medical staff at the Carleton Place & Ottawa Hospitals for their help over the years.

A special thank you to the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice staff & volunteers for their compassion and care given in his final days.

An interment  will be held at United Cemeteries on Friday, April 11, 2025 with a Celebration of Life to take place on Saturday April 12th from 1-4 p.m. at the Carleton Place Army and Navy Club, 315 Townline Road East in Carleton Place.

For those who wish, a donation can be made to your choice of; the Irene Goodman Cancer Centre, your local Hospice, or a local organization supporting minor sports.
